Darlene (Mielitz) Gilles 1920-2003

Darlene Gilles, 83, of Mt. Angel, died Oct. 12, 2003. She was born Nov. 18, 1920, in Jenkins Township, Iowa, to Roy and Lottie (Fogle) Mielitz, and raised in Iowa.

Darlene married Gilbert Gilles on Dec. 17, 1939. They began life together in Iowa where she was a homemaker, but moved to Minnesota in 1946 and then to Southern California in 1951. ln 1988 they moved to Keizer, Ore., to the McNary Estates.

Darlene was diagnosed in the early 1970s with Parkinson's disease, which she fought valiantly. She enjoyed sewing, painting with oils, and woodcarving. She has been a member of the Catholic Church since the 1940's.

Darlene is survived by her husband Gilbert of Mt. Angel; daughter Ann Diocson of Torrance, Calif.; sons James Gilles of Sacramento, Calif., Jerome Gilles of Carson, Calif., and Edward Gilles of Keizer; sister Margery Gillilan of Fremont, Calif.; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be held at 9 a.m. Friday at Calvary Cemetery in Mt. Angel. Memorial Mass will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Mt. Angel Towers.

Contributions may be made to Willamette Columbia Parkinsonian Society, 1015 NW 22nd Ave., Portland. Arrangements were made by Unger Funeral Chapel of Mt. Angel.
