Farmer Dies
in AccidentOSAGE, IOWA — Henry C. Lewis, 79, farmer west of here, was killed Thursday in a traffic accident a mile and a quarter west of Osage on Highway 9.
Lewis was driving a tractor, which was pulling a hay rack. The tractor collided with a car driven by George A. Veldhouse, 41, of Clarion, who operates a roller skating rink at Eagle Grove.
Deputy Sheriff Francis Heffron said the drivers of a gasoline transport truck and another truck had just passed Lewis, and the drivers said Lewis appeared to pull across the road into the way of the car, possibly to park on the other side.
Lewis suffered a broken neck and a skull fracture. Veldhouse was cut on the knee and bruised, but was not hospitalized. Ralph Lewis a brother of the victim, was riding in the rack. He suffered cuts on the face but was not hospitalized.
Henry Lewis was born on September 14, 1875, to Henry and Lucretia (Bartlett) Lewis on a farm near Osage. He was married to Mabel Kennedy of Waterloo in 1909. The lived at Chanute, Kansas, then a Willow Springs, Missouri, where his wife died. He returned to Osage in 1924 and in 1939 went to the farm west of Osage to reside with his brother and sister.
Survivors include a daughter Mrs. John Brooks, Washington D.C., two grandchildren, his brother, Ralph, and sister, Miss Beryl.
Funeral services are pending word from the daughter who is at present vacationing in Florida.
