OSAGE, IOWA - Charles Dean Rice, 79, of Osage died Thursday (Aug. 16, 2001) at Mitchell County Regional Health Center in Osage.

Charles Dean was born to Chester and Leota (Hungerford) Rice on the 25th of December, 1921, in Osage. He attended school in Osage and Waterloo, Iowa, and graduated from Osage High School in 1940.

He enlisted in the Army Air Corps on January 27, 1941, and served his country in World War II in New Guinea. He was honorably discharged from the service in January of 1945. He was awarded several medals, including two Bronze Stars, Air Medal and Oak Leaf Cluster and the Distinguished Flying Cross.

He attended the Northern Illinois College of Optometry in Chicago, Ill., and received his doctor of optometry degree in 1948. He opened his practice in January of 1949 and continued his practice in Osage for 51 years. He always enjoyed living and working in his hometown of Osage.

Dean was united in marriage to Gloria Parr on February 18, 1951, and they celebrated their 50th anniversary this year. They were blessed with two children, Deborah and David. He is so sadly missed by his wife and his children and their families, whom he loved so much.

Dean was baptized as a youth and was a member of First Baptist Church of Osage. The last few years he attended the Christian and Missionary Alliance Church of Osage. Charles was also a member of the Osage American Legion Post No. 278 and the Osage V.F.W. Post No. 7920.

He is survived by his wife, Gloria, of Osage; his daughter, Deborah Farkas and her children, Rachel and Amy, of Osage; his son, David and his wife, Linda, and their children, Katie and Jason, of Osage; his sister, Marilynn Horner of Vandalia, Ohio; a sister-in-law, Irene Rice of Orlando, Fla.; and an aunt, Margaret Rice of Osage; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents; parents; a brother, John Rice; a nephew, David Horner and his family; and a niece, Valerie Erikson.

His funeral will be held at 1 p.m. on Monday at the Christian and Missionary Alliance Church in Osage, with the Rev. Rick Magstadt officiating. Interment will be in the Osage Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on Sunday at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage, with the family present from 5 to 6 p.m. There will be further visitation one hour prior to services at the church.
