Two Die in Cresco Crash

A thick blanket of fog that covered the bulk of Iowa Monday night claimed the lives of Mrs. John (Beverly) Auringer, 26, Waterloo, and her daughter, Cynthia, 2.

Percy Haven said the accident near Cresco happened this way:

A car driven by John D. Auringer, 29, Waterloo, going east on Highway 9, one half mile west of Davis Corners, came up on a semi-trailer. Because of dense fog he was unable to see the truck until almost upon it. He attempted to turn out to pass the truck, but the right rear of the car caught on; the left rear of the truck. The whole right side of the car was torn off and the car overturned on the shoulder of the road.

His daughter, Cynthia was thrown out of the car and was killed instantly. The mother, who had been holding the child, died of injuries at 6 a.m. Tuesday at a Cresco hospital.

Auringer and two sons, Steven, 6, and David, 4 were hospitalized in "fairly good" condition.

The driver of the truck, Lester Frita, 60, Belleville, Wisconsin was not injured.

Mrs. Auringer was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Maurice Meyers, Waterloo, formerly of the New Haven area. Auringer is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Auringer, Riceville. They had spent the Easter weekend at his parents' home and were returning to Waterloo when the accident occurred.
