MONHOLLAND, Henry 1851-1943

MONHOLLAND, MAXHAM, OSTERMAN, TOLLEFSON

Henry Monholland, 92, who had spent the greater part of his long life in this vicinity, died at his home in Riceville Sunday, after an illness of only three days.

Mr. Monholland was remarkable in many ways, and kept his faculties and strength many years longer than the average person. His wife died 19 years ago, but he insisted on remaining in his own home and caring for himself. He drove his car up to the week of his death.

His daughter, Mrs. Gus Osterman, lives next door to him and he ate most of his meals in her home. Last Wednesday when he didn't come to her home as usual, she investigated and found that he had suffered a stroke of paralysis, from which he failed to rally.

Mr. Monholland was born in Wisconsin March 23, 1851, but came to this county when a young boy. He married Ada Maxham January 30,1876 and they settled on a farm just over the line in Howard county. Later they moved to Mitchell county, with Riceville still their address.

Surviving are his children -- Mrs. Mary Tollefson, Preston, Minn.; Mrs. Osterman, Riceville, and Earl Monholland, Davenport. Nieces include Mrs. J.H. Chatman, Mrs. Charles Jacobs, and Mrs. Dan M. Chase, of Osage. The Dockstader families of the Otranto vicinity are also relatives.

Funeral service was held Wednesday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. at Loper Funeral Home in Riceville, and burial was in the cemetery there.

(This obituary was in my Grandmother Anna Matson Richardson's scrapbook. Newspaper unknown but handwritten date says March 14, 1943.)
