Funeral services were conducted for Carl Julius Johnson, Saturday afternoon, September 24, 1949 at the First Lutheran church, St. Ansgar with the Rev. Olaf A. Langehough in charge. Interment was at the First Lutheran cemetery.
Carl Julius Johnson was born November 29, 1874 at Wariberg, Sweden. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith in Sweden. At the age of 18 he emigrated to America and came to Bolan, Iowa.
On October 28, 1899 he was united in marriage to Martha Marie Emelia Ringhand at Northwood, Iowa by the Rev. O.G.U. Siljan, pastor of the Ev. Lutheran church.
To this union, 11 children were born, eight of whom survive. He resided around St. Ansgar and Otranto until the death of his wife on January 29, 1933, after which he moved on a small farm at Bolan, Iowa later moving to Lyle, Minnesota.
When his health failed to the point where he could no longer live alone he made his home with his children. On September 20, 1949 he passed away at the home of his daughter at Boland from a stroke after a lingering illness at the age of 74 years, 9 months and 21 days.
He is survived by his children, Oscar of Riceville, Mrs. Peter Marcussen of Toeterville, Mrs. Mandville Austinsen of LeRoy, Minn.; Mrs. Harold DeMaris of Bolan, Emil of Otranto, Mrs. Otto Helfritz and Mrs. Lloyd Enerson of Lyle, Minn. and Mildred of Otranto; also 15 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; one brother in America and a sister and two brothers in Sweden, besides several nieces and nephews.
