OSAGE YOUTH IS
LOST IN ACTION

Donald S. Cox Member of
U. S. Coast Guard.

Osage, Iowa — Mitchell county Monday had its first casualty of World War II in the receipt by Mrs. Martin Hultman of Osage of a message from the navy department that her son, Donald Stewart Cox, who would have been 20 Monday, is missing in action and presumably lost in performance of duty.

He was graduated from Osage High school in 1941 and enlisted in the U, S. coast guard shortly afterward. His last letter to his mother Sept. 21 told her he was going on a long sailing trip, probably for six months.

Donald was born at LaMoille, Minnesota, and came to Osage seven years ago.

His father, Fred Cox, died eight years ago, and his mother married Martin Hultman at Osage.

Surviving are his mother and two sisters, Gloria Cox, 10, and Sonia Hultman, 4.

MARINER'S MEDAL GIVEN TO
DONALD COX, POSTHUMOUSLY

The Mariner's Medal of the U.S. Merchant Marine was awarded posthumously to Donald Stewart Cox, merchant marine fireman, missing at sea, in a private presentation to his mother, Mrs. Martin Hultman, 533 Walnut Street, Osage, on Thursday, August 10.

Award of the medal, which corresponds to the Order of the Purple Heart for the armed forces was made at Mrs. Hultman's home in Osage by Lt. David J. Brecht, regional enrolling officer of the U.S. Maritime Service in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Donald was serving on the S.S. La Salle, which was reported as missing with all hands on September 26, 1942.

In presenting the medal Mr. Brecht read Mrs. Hultman the following letter from Admiral E. S. Land, War Shipping Administrator, notifying her of the award:

"Dear Mrs. Hultman:" Mrs. Brecht read, "by authority of the congress of the United States, it is my honor to present to you, the mother of Fireman Donald Steward Cox, the Mariner's Medal in commemoration of the greatest service anyone can render cause or country.

"Fireman Cox was serving on the S.S. La Salle, which was reported missing with all hands on September 26, 1942. He was one of those men who today are so gallantly upholding the traditions of those hearty mariners who defied anyone to stop the American flag from sailing the seas in the early days of this republic. He was one of those men upon whom the nation now depends to keep our ships afloat upon the perilous seas - to transport our troops across those seas; and to carry to them the vitally needed material to keep them fighting until victory is certain and liberty secure.

"Nothing I can do or say will, in any sense, requite the loss of your loved one. He has gone, but he has gone in honor and in the goodly company of patriots. Let me, in this expression of the country's deep sympathy, also express to you it's gratitude for his devotion and sacrifice - E. S. Land, Administrator."
