Mrs. Margaret Tobin Is Dead

Aged Osage Lady Born In Ireland in 1838-Came to America at Age of Fourteen Years

Little did this community realize until the past few weeks how strong a hold on our hearts Mrs. Margaret Tobin had. She was one of those quiet, retiring women whose faithful performance of the every day duties and whose devotion to their church are among the most vital influences for good in the world. She was a devoted christian whose family and church claimed her first thought. Tuesday Nov. 6, she passed her eighty-fifth milestone.

Margaret Jordan was born in Castle Bar, Mayo county, Ireland, November 6, 1838, and passed away November 10, 1923, at midnight at her home on south eighth street. At the age of fourteen she came with her parents to America. Many were the quaint stories and she had to tell of the long six weeks trip in a sailing vessel crossing the Atlantic. It was a journey marked with a deep tragedy, for the father and one brother died on the voyage and were buried at sea. The mother and her children found a refuge in America with relatives in New York state. Mrs. Tobin though denied the privileges of an education was a well read woman. She was not only found of our best literature, but until her last illness kept in touch with the current world events.

Six years after reaching this county she came with the family to Illinois, where they resided a year. They then came to Mitchell county.

On October 23, 1863, she was married to James Tobin and they resided on a farm seven miles north of Mitchell. To this union were born seven children, to of whom died in infancy and James at the age of 11; four are living: misses Mame and Margaret of Osage, Neil of Omaha, Neb.; and Frank of Memomonie, Wis.

She leaves one sister, Mrs. Wm. Rogers, of Cedar township.

In 1891 Mrs. Tobin came to Osage to make her home and live here ever since.

The funeral was conducted by her pastor, Rev. Father Martin, Tuesday morning at 9 o'clock and all that was mortal was laid to rest in the Sacred Heart cemetery.
