BURIAL AT OSAGE CEMETERY

River claims
former Mason
City youth

Sidney Root Jr., 17, was drowned Saturday evening, [June 10, 1961] in the Wapsipinicon River, near Independence, Iowa.

Root drowned while attempting to swim across a 200 yard spot in the river. Kenneth Appleby, 17, a companion swimming with Root, said he heard the youth's cries for help and managed to reach Root but could not hold onto him.

Appleby yelled to onlookers on the shore who summoned Independence firemen who recovered the youth, but were unable to revive him.

The son of Sidney Root, Independence, he had lived in Mason City until moving to Independence 1½ years ago. His mother, the former Myrna Wagner, New Haven, died last year.

Surviving are his father and a sister, Mrs. Robert Wandrey, Mason City.

Funeral services will be Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. at St. John Catholic Church, Independence, with burial in Osage Cemetery Tuesday afternoon.
