SUDDEN DEATH - Last Friday evening our citizens were startled by the announcement that L.H. Lezotte, one of our old citizens was dead.
Mr. Lezotte has been in feeble health for several years, but nothing unusual had occurred to warn him or his friends that he would so suddenly take his departure to a happier and better world.
He occupied rooms with his son over Bush & Buck’s store, and both retired Thursday night as usual. In the morning his son, who is a lad about seventeen years old, got up, built a fire and then went to the bed to awaken his father, but to his astonishment found that he was dead. To all appearances he had died without a struggle, and he lay in death as if he was asleep, so quietly had his spirit taken its flight.
Mr. Lezotte was a widower, and leaves two sons, the one who was with him at the time of his death, the other with friends in Vermont, with whom he has made his home since the death of his mother.
Mr. Lezotte was of a quiet disposition, social and friendly with all his acquaintances, and had by industry and economy secured a competency. He was a worthy member of the various lodges of the Masonic fraternity in this city, and always took an important part in all their gatherings.
His funeral took place at the Methodist Episcopal Church, of which he was an acceptable member on Sunday morning, under direction of the Masonic fraternity and his earthly remains were
deposited in the cemetery with Masonic honors.[Mitchell Co. Press, January 21, 1875]

NOTES:
The original image was hard to read, and only showed his initials, which looked like "I.H." or "L.H.". But the Listing on IaGenWeb for Osage City cemetery shows a LEWIS LEZOTTE:LEZOTTE, LEWIS (bur. loc.) 0013 9 (death or burial date) 15 JAN 1875.
