OSAGE, IOWA - Richard L. "Dick" Gast, age 84, of Osage, died on Friday, November 7, 2008, at Faith Lutheran Home in Osage.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Tuesday, November 11, at Rock Creek Lutheran Church, 3269 Foothill Ave., Osage, with the Rev. R. Dawson Tornes officiating. Burial will be in the Rock Creek Cemetery with military honors conducted by Osage VFW Post 7920 and the Osage American Legion Post 278. Visitation is from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage and will continue one hour before services at the church.
Dick was born January 20, 1924, near Nora Springs, the son of Clifford and Alma (Paulson) Gast. Dick attended schools in Osage. In 1940, Dick was a state high school wrestling champion, as was his brother, George. They were the first brothers to win state titles in Iowa in the same year. He graduated from Osage High School in 1941.
Dick was united in marriage to Lyla Hackbart on July 28, 1944, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Osage. He served in the Navy from 1944 to 1946. Dick farmed, worked at the Osage Feed and Seed, and for the Iowa Department of Agriculture as an ag products inspector. Dick was a member of Rock Creek Lutheran Church, a charter member of the Osage VFW Post 7920 and a member of the Osage American Legion Post 278. Dick enjoyed attending sporting events and playing cribbage, in which he once had a perfect hand. Dick loved, most of all, spending time with his family.
Dick is survived by his wife, Lyla Gast of Osage; three sons, Ron (Jane) Gast of Monticello and their children, Tracy and Trevor, Bruce (Cheryl) Gast of Osage and their children, Ben and Matt, Del (Karen) Gast of Osage, and their children, Carly and Jessie; 8 great-grandchildren; one brother, Bill (Colleen) Gast of Nora Springs; one sister, Marlys (Clarence) Wegman of Inver Grove Heights, Minn.; several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Nancy Gast; brothers and sisters-in-law, Clyndon (Beatrice) Gast and George (Violette) Gast; a nephew, Jerry Gast.
