Gjest Manasse Hansen was born at Lyngvor, Vik, Norway, September 3, 1826 and died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Tholo at Puget Island Washington, May 29, 1904, being therefore nearly 78 years of age.
He grew up at his native place and married Miss Anna M. Iverson. In 1866 the family immigrated to this county, coming to Green Bay, Wis., to which place Rev. Olsen, with whom they were well acquainted in Norway, had previously come. They continued to reside at Green Bay until the spring of 1864 a year and a half after Rev. Olsen had come to St. Ansgar when they came to St. Ansgar, March 13, 1882, Mrs. Hansen died. Mr. Hansen continued to reside here until July 1, 1897, when he went with his daughter, Antonette, to the Pacific coast and for a number of years divided his time between Puget Island, San Francisco and Tacoma.
The 27th of May 1903, he was stricken with paralysis. For the first two days following the attack he kept up about the house but from June 29, 1903 until the day of his death, just eleven months he was not even able to sit up but was confined to his bed continually and was under the constant care of his daughter, although for the first month he was in the hospital at Astoria taking treatment.
Of a large family of children only three survive him. These are Mrs. Henry Larson of Meltonville, Mrs. Thorlo of Puget Sound, Washington, and Emanuel of Graf, Iowa. Three, Mrs. Peterson, Jacob and John lie buried in the St. Ansgar N.L. cemetery. It had always been his wish that his lifelong friend, Rev. Olsen should conduct his funeral, and so he was present and did all his health would permit. He was assisted by Rev. Waldeland. The services were held at the home of O.K. Berg, another old friend, and the remains were laid to rest in the N.L. cemetery, June 17, 1904.
