Bergit Aslagsdatter Lee was born in Hallingdal, Norway, February 9, 1836. She came with her parents to Rock Prairie, Wis. in 1856 and to St. Ansgar in 1857. The same year she was married to Christopher Hansen, Rev. C.L. Clausen officiating.
This union was blessed with 14 children, ten of whom, together with her aged husband, survive her.
Their oldest daughter, Julia Sophia Neilson died March 25, 1901, age 42, Caroline Mullarky died June 24, 1903 in Mexico age 29; Maria, born in 1871, died in infancy; May Louise, died March 11, 1882 at the age of 2 years.
Of the surviving children, Christina Harlis lives at Osage, Iowa; Hans Lauris Hansen, who was too ill to be present, at McIntosh, Minn.; Olaf Seymour Hansen, at North Yakama, Wash.; Alexander Douglas Hansen, at Wyndmere, North Dakota; Karl Martinus Hansen, at Red Lake Falls, Minn.; Agnette Johnson, at Virginia, Minn., (she was also detained by sickness in her family); Anna M. Mrs. Hansen lived to see 39 grandchildren, of these 32 are living, the oldest of these, Palma Harlis Smith is married and lives at Salt Lake City, Utah.
The thought and company of her grandchildren was a source of happiness to Mrs. Hansen in her old age. Especially did she rejoice in the knowledge that of her 12 children who grew to manhood and womanhood all have their marriages blessed with children.
Mr. and Mrs. Hansen lived on a farm one mile south of town for 44 years. She enjoyed exceptionally good health until July 28, 1903, when she was stricken with apoplexy. During her long illness she was visited by all her children with the exception of two who were unavoidable detained. On Friday June 15, at 10:45 a.m. she passed pecefully away. The funeral was held June 18th, which was her oldest son's birthday. Rev. Waldeland officiated. The remains were laid to rest in the N.L. Cemetery north of town.
