Hans Peter Hansen was born at Holstrup, Denmark, July 1, 1816, and died at the home of A.C. Hansen, his youngest son, on the 8th of April, 1914, at the age of 97 years, 9 months, and 8 days. His mother died when he was only four years old and he was then brought up by his grandparents. On the 1st day of April, 1831, he was confirmed at Holstrup, Denmark, In the year 1838 at the age of twenty-two he enlisted in the Danish army and served two years. When war broke out, between Germany and Denmark he offered himself as volunteer and served three years during years 1848, 1849 and 1850. In the year 1852 he went with a party of six to Australia remaining almost three years. This journey was made in the common sailing vessel of that time and occupied thirteen weeks to cross one way.
In 1855, he was married to Anna Marie Lowe of Holstrup, Denmark. To this union were born eight children, seven sons and one daughter. Two sons died in infancy. He lived in Denmark until 1871 when he brought his family to America, settling in St. Ansgar township. In 1876, he moved to Mitchell township, where he had resided ever since. The daughter, Mrs. M. Maasbol died in 1892 and in 1898 his wife was laid to rest at the age of 71. The surviving children are Edward of Lismore, Minn., Christian of Osage, Iowa, Hans C. of St. Ansgar, Iowa, Peter B. of Turlock, Calif., and Adolph C. of Osage, Iowa, who were all present at the funeral, with the exception of Peter B. of Calif. Besides the five sons, fourteen grandchildren and five greatgrandchildren survive him.
During the past seven years he has received an honorary pension from the Danish Governor for faithful service in the wars of 1848-1850. He remained clear minded and interested in daily happenings almost to the last. Four weeks ago he began to fail rapidly and on Wednesday morning, April 8, he passed away. The funeral services were conducted both at house and church by Rev. M.E. Waldeland and deceased was laid to rest on Good Friday, April 10, 1914 in the N.L. Cemetery.
