#3: (Biographical story)

Martin Field came to America in 1868 at the age of ten years with his parents Ole and Gunhild Fjeld and his two brothers from Norde Aurdal in Valdres, Norway. A year was spent in Wisconsin before the family settled in the Rock Creek area. He attended the Walnut Grove school at Meora. His first teacher was Paul Myer. He was a member of the first confirmation class at the Rock Creek Lutheran Church and was confirmed in 1973. He assisted his father on the farm and took over the farm when his parents retired.

On June 3, 1892 he was united in marriage to Gunhild Moe, daughter of Ole and Guri Moe. They celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary June 3, 1942. Mrs. Field passed away March 22, 1943.

They were parents of four children Mina, Oscar, Gea, and Olga. Mina married Milton Wamstad on June 10, 1914, Gea married Tillman Norby on June 5, 1919. Oscar and Olga lived with their father on the farm, Oscar taking over the operation of the farm after his father retired. In 1955 he and daughter Olga moved into Osage, Iowa, Oscar having passed away February 11, 1954.

Martin Field saw many changes in his lifetime, he lived through the time of stage coaches, early locomotives, automobiles, airplanes, telephone, radio and television. He had reached the age of 101 at the time of his death July 19, 1959. The farm is still in the family and is owned by his grandson John Norby.
