OSCAR VIRCHOW OF CEDAR FALLS TAKEN BY DEATH

Cedar Falls – Oscar R. Virchow, 54, of 815 State Street, died early Thursday in the Veterans hospital at Des Moines, where he had been taken just eight days ago, following a long period as a patient at Sartori Memorial hospital here. Death was due to a complication of ailments, a member of the family said.

Virchow was a veteran of the 1st World War, in which he served approximately two years in 1918-1919. He had been a resident of Cedar Falls for the last 27 years.

He was born at Osage, June 16, 1896, where he grew to young manhood and on September 30, 1918, married Alma Anderson and shortly afterward went away to war. They moved to Cedar Falls in 1923.

Virchow had been employed by the Wolverton Printing Company in Osage and continued with the firm when it came here about 30 years ago until last year, when he took employment at the John Deere Tractor works in Waterloo.

Surviving besides the widow are a son and daughter, Robert R. Virchow, a member of the U.S. regular army stationed at Honolulu, Hawaii, and Mrs. George Pollard, Los Angeles, California. The son has been here on leave for about a month, called home when his father’s condition became serious.

Also surviving are a brother and sister. They include William Virchow and Mrs. Fred Birum, both of Osage.

Preceding him were his parents, a brother, Emil, and two sisters, Mrs. Ida Marson and Mrs. Vina Gunderson.

Virchow was a member of st. John’s American Lutheran church here and of the American Legion. Funeral arrangements await arrival of the daughter. The body is at the Dahl Funeral Home.
