Death of Fannie Leighton
Fannie R. Leighton, youngest daughter of Byron and Mary F. Leighton, was born in Mitchell County, July 13th, 1877, and died at her father's home, 4 miles west of Osage, November 15th, 1897, aged 20 years, 4 months and 2 days.
Two baby brothers and a sister nine years of age have gone before her. A married sister, Mrs. Cheney, lives in the state of Maine; and three married brothers reside in Iowa, two in Chickasaw county, and one at Anamosa. The brothers were all in attendance at the funeral, which was held in the Methodist church today, at 1:30 o'clock.
Fannie had been sick for about five weeks with typhiod fever, but her parents had thought she would recover till fifteen minutes before her last breath. she had talked with her mother about death during her sickness, and seemed fully prepared. When fifteen minutes before her death, her breath began to come hard, she asked to be raised; then she said, "Good bye, I am going," when asked by her father where she was going, she replied, "I am going to Heaven;" and answering a question from her mother, she said, "I am not afraid." With these words on her lips she passed away.
Fannie has been a member of the Methodist church in Osage for about five years. Her funeral was largely attended by friends of the family and her old school friends in the Seminary. Her death leaves Mr. and Mrs. Leighton alone on the farm. She had promised her hand in marriage to a worthy young man, and were to have been married soon had she recovered. She was a young lady loved by her friends. The bereaved ones have the fullest sympathy of all the community.
