OSAGE, IOWA - Bessie Lavawn Pollard, 99, of Osage died Tuesday, November 9, 2010, at her home in Osage.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 12, at the First United Methodist Church in Osage with the Rev. Anna Blaedel officiating. Burial will be in the Osage Cemetery.
Visitation is from 5-7 p.m., Thursday, November 11, at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage.
Bessie was born on August 8, 1911, in Deep River, Iowa, the daughter of Herbert and Jennie (Hill) Pierce. She graduated from Deep River High School in 1929 and received her teaching certificate from Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls.
Bessie married James Edwin Pollard on July 4, 1940, in Lancaster, Missouri. She taught in rural schools in the Deep River area and they moved to Osage in 1949.
Bessie was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Osage, the Retired Teachers Association, Osage Wa-Tan-Ye and the First United Methodist Women. She was a Girl Scout leader and served as a Sunday school teacher for over 30 years. Bessie enjoyed playing cards, dominoes, reading and spending time with her family.
Bessie is survived by her five children, Ned (Carol) Pollard of Osage; Gary Pollard of Osage; Elaine (Craig) Rose of Clinton, Missouri; Kay (Larry) Combs of Corinth, Texas; Janet (Claude) Kirchgatter of Riceville; and Joni Graves (friend and caregiver) of Osage; 12 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, James, in 1973; a daughter, Nancy; a granddaughter, April Pollard; and four brothers and five sisters.
