OLSEN, John Hognes 1846-1933
BUSINESS PLACES ARE CLOSED DURING FUNERAL TO HONOR MEMORY OF BUSINESS MAN
John H. Olsen, 87, prominently identified with the civic and business life of St. Ansgar since 1876, died at his home of heart disease on Friday afternoon, October 27, 1933. Funeral service were conducted at the home and at First Lutheran church Monday afternoon. Rev. Olaf A. Langehough in charge. Burial was in the Evergreen cemetery, north of town. All business places were closed during the funeral out of respect to the memory of the pioneer merchant.
John Hognes Olsen, son of Ole and Johanna Hognes, was born at Stordalen, near Trondhjem, Norway on December 16, 1846. He was baptized and confirmed in Lade Lutheran church and later worshipped in the famous old cathedral of Trondhjem.
He emigrated to America in 1870, settling in Rock Prairie, Wis., and came to St Ansgar in 1876 where he has lived ever since with the exception of two years spent in Osage.
He was married to Randi Ingebritson, who died February 4, 1918. Ten children were born to this union of whom six are living; Mrs. Mary Whitaker, Osage; Jennie and Anna of St. Ansgar; Theodore C., Waterloo; Mrs.Inga Halvorson of Beach, N. D., and Anton B. of Minneapolis. Five grandchildren and one great grandchild also survive.
Although never robust, Mr. Olsen had enjoyed good health until last June, since when he has been confined to his home but not to his bed. Friday morning a change came for the worse and he died at 3:15 p.m.
The following appreciation of John Olsen was written by a fellow business man;
Mr. Olsen was a substantial citizen and his passing closed a career that has been identified in a constructive way with the upbuilding of our community.
A cabinet maker by trade, he came to America from Norway in 1870 at a time when skilled workmanship in this and kindred lines was much in demand. His ability as a carpenter found him ready employment in Chicago after the great fire in that city.
Returning to Wisconsin where he had first settled, he came with his family to St. Ansgar in 1876. Here he early engaged in the furniture business, and continued in its conduct until shortly before his death.
An active member of First Lutheran church, he gave freely of his time and efforts to its interest as well as to the interest of education and to the demands of citizenship.
Mr. Olsen's ripe age of eighty-seven years has richly earned for him high esteem as a man of real worth. He has been loyal to the higher principles of life and faithful to the duties of citizenship.
