ITEM #1:

Death of Auditor Houg

Prof. Halsten S. Houg was born at Beloit, Wisconsin August 12, 1852. His parents removed to Clayton County, Iowa, the same year. Here he was confirmed by Rev. Bjord. He received his early education at the Clermont and West Union High schools. For some years he taught public and parochial schools in Clayton Coounty, Iowa aad Becker County, Minnesota. Later on he entered the Collegiate department at Augsburg Seminary, Minneapolis, Minnesota, graduating with honors in 1878. The same year, at the request of Rev. J. Olsen and Rev. Gjeldeker, he founded the St. Ansgar Seminary. He became this school's first principal and taught here for twenty years.

In 1882 he married Miss Helena Groth. Their marriage was blessed with five children, of which two daughters and one son have passed away, and Selma and Monrad, with their mother, survive a highly beloved father and husband.

In the fall of 1898 Prof. Houg was elected County Auditor for Mitchell County. He has been elected to this same office for six successive terms.

Prof. Houg has been in poor health since the first part of last November. He suffered with pleurisy. A month ago, he underwent an operation at the St. Barnabas Hospital, Minneapolis, Minnesota. He seemed to rally at first, but later on there was a slow decline until death ended his sufferings. During all the time be was sick he daily wanted to hear the 14th and 16th chapters of the Gospel of John and the 23rd Psalm.

He died peacefully March 3, 1910. Just before he passed away, he took his wife's hand and with difficulty read the Lord's prayer. A moment later she comforted him with these words: "The Blood of Jesus Christ, the Son of God, cleanseth from all sin." He answered: "Yes, Yes," and then all was still.

Funeral services were conducted at the Osage and St. Ansgar U. N. Lutheran Churches, Reverend Uunes delivering the Norwegian sermons and Reverend Waldeland the English. At Osage, the St. Ansgar Seminary was represented by Prof. C. C. Swain, the principal, who spoke in behalf of the faculty, and by Miss Alma Holt who presented resolutions from the student body.

At St. Ansgar, Prof. M. R. Odegaard and Ms. Elmer Erickson represented the school in a similar way.

There was a special singing at Osage by a Sunday School chorus and at St. Ansgar by the regular church choir. Both churches were crowded with the many friends and acquaintances who gathered to show him a last mark of respect.

His remains were laid to rest in the N. L. Cemetery north of St. Ansgar.
