CARPENTER, ROAD SHOW KING, DIES
Ernest J. Carpenter, 95, king of the road show era when for more than 40 years Broadway hits played the small towns of America, died Tuesday in a Mason City nursing home.
He was born on a farm in the Osage area, June 5, 1869. It has been a number of years now, since he closed his office on Times Square, New York City, and retired to the old home near Osage.
For a time, he took tickets at the Strand Theater in Mason City, but in later years he had been in homes for the aged. There are no surviving relatives.
During four decades he produced and presented plays in all parts of the nation. Acting in them were some of the greatest actors and actresses of that day.
Some seasons he had as many as 12 companies on the road. He visited every town in the United States and Canada with population of at lest 5,000.
He was a 50-year Mason. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Champion Funeral Home in Osage. The Masons will conduct the services.
