OSAGE - Kathryn A. Dunlay, 99, of Osage, died Tuesday (Dec. 21, 1999) at the Faith Lutheran Home, Osage, of natural causes.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Osage, with Father Philip Recker officiating. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery in Riceville.
Visitation will be held from 2:30 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Champion Funeral Home, Osage, with a 3 p.m. rosary and a scripture service at 7 p.m.
Memorials may be directed to the Kathryn Dunlay Scholarship Fund at Winona State University.
Kay was born Sept. 30, 1900, in Bailey, a daughter of William and Mary (Jordan) Dunlay. She was educated in rural schools and graduated from McIntire High School.
Kay completed her primary course at Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, and earned her bachelor and master of arts degrees at Northwestern University, Evanston, Ill., in the fields of education and sociology. Additional past graduate studies were obtained at the University of Chicago, the University of Colorado and the University of Minnesota.
In 1925, Kay began her teaching career at Cresco. She held that position until moving to Estherville in 1927. In the fall of 1929, she joined the elementary school faculty at Council Bluffs, for what was to be the first of her 20 years there.
Kay became a member of the Winona State University faculty in 1948 and retired in 1970 as professor emeritus. Kay has been a resident of the Faith Lutheran Home in Osage for the past seven years.
Kay was a member of AAUW and past advisor to the Newcome Club, Delta Zeta Epsilon sorority, a charter member of Delta Kappa Gamma, Association for Childhood Education International, Grand Marshall for WSU Homecoming and was inducted into the Winona State University Cornerstone Society.
Kay was a dedicated, creative and remarkable educator. Her understanding as a teacher working with children and her wisdom given to students and teachers defined her as an outstanding educator.
She is survived by two sisters, Irene Weber and Rose Meyer, both of Osage; a niece, Beverly Keim and her husband, Keith, of Cedar Rapids; three nephews, William Becvar, of Tacoma, Wash., James Dunlay and his wife, Carol, of Woodbury, Minn., and Dennis Dunlay and his wife, Jan, of Perkins, Okla.
She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters and two brothers.
