JOHN CHERNY DIES AT INDEPENDENCE
Independence, Iowa - John Lewis Cherny, Independence attorney, died at 2 a.m. Monday at his home here of a heart attack.
He was born February 3, 1883, at Osage, son of John and Elizabeth Cherny, and married Alta Mercile of Osage January 27, 1910.
He came to Independence in 1913, as superintendent of schools. Later Mr. Cherny attended the law school at University of Chicago and was admitted to practice in 1917.
He was president of the Buchanan County Bar association, member of the Rotary club and Masonic lodge, and was director of the Farmers State bank here. He was a member of the board of trustees of the Methodist church and vice president of the Tenth Judicial District Bar association.
Surviving are his widow, three children, Mrs. Keith W. Woodhouse, Cedar Rapids; Mrs. Ryan Kelly, Waterloo; and Jack, Independence.
Funeral services will be Wednesday at the Peoples funeral home, with burial in the Mount Hope Cemetery.
