John P. Schneider
Died From Heart
Attack Saturday
John P. Schneider, one of the few remaining Civil War veterans of this vicinity, died suddenly Saturday forenoon from a heart attack. He had been up and about his home as usual, and had not complained of feeling unwell. His wife found him in the bathroom, where he had apparently died instantly.
Mr. Schneider was born in the Schleswig-Holstein province of Germany in 1843. His father, John P. Schneider, Sr., brought the family to Milwaukee, Wisconsin when John Jr., was about two years of age, and it was there that the young mother died. A few years later the family moved to Oshkosh and lived there until John grew to manhood.
He enlisted for service in the Civil war about 1862 in the Third Wisconsin cavalry and served until the end of the war, coming through unscathed.
Following his honorable discharge he came to Osage and this has been his home since with the exception of a few years spent in Waterloo.
He married Anna Hise, and to them were born three children; Mrs. Alma Engle, who died while a young woman leaving a small boy, Maynard; Fred, who passed away a couple of years ago at Cedar Rapids; and the surviving Mrs. Rogers, mentioned below.
Mr. Schneider was a metal worker and tinner by trade, and for forty-seven years was engaged in work on Osage's main street. He operated his own shop, and for many years was located in the old Tupper & Odden Hardware Store, now the Osage Hardware Company.
His first wife passed away, and he married Mrs. Clara Gilbert who, with one daughter, Mrs. Clyde Rogers, of Yakima, Washington survives him. There are also three grandchildren.
Mr. Schneider, although 92 years of age, has always been mentally active, was able to transact his own business up to the time of his death. He had gradually been losing his eyesight, however, and for the past few months hadn't been able to get up town by himself.
He and Mrs. Schneider moved to Waterloo about ten years ago, where they own a pleasant home, but when he became increasingly feeble moved to Osage again to be near Mrs. Schneider's daughter, Mrs. Ernie Mork.
Mr. Schneider was a kind husband and father, and an honest dependable business man. He has a legion of friends in this community who regret his passing.
Funeral services were held on Monday afternoon at the Champion Funeral Home in charge of Reverend Frank A. Court, and burial was made beside his first wife and daughters in the family lot in the Osage Cemetery.
