HERBERT MEIRICK
Herbert Jerome Meirick was born April 4, 1914 in East Lincoln Township, Mitchell County, Iowa, the son of Joseph and Helen Meirick. He attended St. Mary's Academy at New Haven. He was a member of the Catholic Order of Foresters and St. Peter's Church tow year previous to entering the service. He operated a portable mill while he was living with his mother in Elma.
Herbert served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, giving his life in 1942. Headlines in the Mitchell County Press, November 19, 1942, read, "Herbert Meirick Killed in Action in Pacific Battle."
Herbert was killed on the aircraft carrier Hornet in the battle of the Santa Cruz Island on October 26, 1942.
