Funeral for Wagner,
Riceville, Conducted

RICEVILLE, IOWA — The funeral services for Stephen Wagner, age 50, were held in the church of the Immaculate Conception Thursday morning with Father Hetherington in charge and burial in Calvary Cemetery.

Mr. Wagner leaves, besides the widow, five children all of Riceville. This family came to Riceville from the New Haven community about 15 years ago and have lived on the farm, three miles south of town on the county line, since that time.

#2:

STEVE WAGNER, WELL
KNOWN FARMER, SHOT
SELF TUESDAY MORN.

Steve Wagner, a well-known farmer living two miles south of Riceville in Howard county, was found in his barn between 4 and 5 o'clock a.m. Tuesday, shot through the heart.

His shotgun was just in front of him, and every indication was that he had committed suicide by leaning over the gun and pulling the trigger. SOme think he must have held a short stock in his hand to reach the trigger. He was found by members of his family; apparently he died instantly.

Mr. Wagner, who was about 50 years of age, suffered a severe nervous breakdown early this spring, and his mental condition has been more or less unsettled since that time. This seems the only possible reason for his act, as he was considered a good farmer, a fine husband and father, with no known troubles of any kind.

His wife was formerly Alta Fox, of New Haven, and they were parents of five children: Glen, Gladys and Agnes, and two small boys whose names we did not learn. Mrs. Wagner has also been in poor health for the past few months.

Surviving beisdes his wife and children, are his aged mother, Mrs. Matt Wagner of Charles City; his sister, Merna, Charles City; brothers, Joe, of Greene, John of New Haven; Albert of California; Philip, of Alta Vista; and Frank, of Minneapolis.
