ST. ANSGAR, IOWA — Max L. Patterson, 76, died on Friday, October 16, 1998, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday, October 19, 1998, at First Lutheran Church, St. Ansgar, with the Rev. Robert Porisch officiating. Burial will be in the St. Ansgar Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Schroeder and Sites Funeral Home, 207 South School St., St. Ansgar.

Max Lewis Patterson was born on April 7, 1922, in Mitchell County, rural Lyle, Minnesota, the son of John C. and Velma (Rutt) Patterson. He attended grade school at Mona.

Max served in the U.S. Navy during World War II aboard ship in the southwest Pacific. Max married Mildred Holstad of Northwood on September 18, 1943, in San Diego, California. After his discharge from the Navy, he returned to Mitchell County to the farm.

Max was a member of Six Mile Grove Lutheran Church, rural Lyle, Minn., for nearly 50 years, serving as chairman, deacon and trustee. He also served on the Toeterville Elevator Board and the Federal Land Bank Board. Since moving to St. Ansgar, he had been a member of First Lutheran Church, St. Ansgar.

Max farmed in Mitchell County many years before purchasing Nickerson Seed in rural Osage, later changing the name to Patterson Seed. He retired due to ill health, turning the business over to his sons.

In his later years he enjoyed working with his Percheron horses, his pride and joy. He took part in many parades and sleigh rides in the winter.

He is survived by his wife, Mildred, of St. Ansgar; five sons, Craig Patterson and his wife, Romona, Jerry Patterson and his wife, Susan, Roger Patterson and his wife, Diane, Michael Patterson and his wife, Lisa, and Phil Patterson and his wife, Jodi, all of rural St. Ansgar; his grandsons, Jamie, Scott, Chris and his wife, Wendy, Terry and his wife, Nancy, Jeremy and Dustin Patterson; his granddaughters, Julie Nickerson, Kimberly and her husband, Kent Karschnik, Dar Tanya, Darcy, Danielle, Mandy and Kelsi Patterson; his great-grandchildren, Autumn and Bryce Nickerson, Garrett, Alexandra, Dargan, Nicole and Blake Patterson, and Domonic Bierbrodt; his brothers, Don Patterson and his wife, Enid, of Lyle, Minn., John Patterson and his wife, Fran, and Darrell Patterson and his wife, Ruth, both of St. Ansgar; his sisters, Neva and her husband, Otto Nelson, of Lyle, Minn., Helen and her husband, Clarence Debner, of Marble Rock, and Lois and her husband ,Walter Benesh, of Austin, Minn.; and many nieces and nephews and a host of friends.

Max was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers in infancy.
