Ragnald (Rogne)(Turtnes) Thorson 1823-1889
Ragnald Nilsn Rogne was born on August 16, 1823 in Valders, Norway.
She first married Andres Olson Turtnes, in Norway. They had four children before her husband died--at a young age. Some relatives in America advised her to come to America with her chiuldren, where they would have a better life.
She hired a girl to help her on the trip, and they left from Bergen, Norway in 1861, on a ship named "Hebe."
There were 400 people on board the ship--and each family had to cook their own food and board themselves. It took nine weeks to cross the Atlantic Ocean, and sailors had to work hard with the sails during many storms. The wind carried the ship northward to where they could see icebergs.
Ragnald and her family eventually reached St. Ansgar, Iowa, where she met Erick Thorson. She married Erick in 1866, and they made their home in Newburg Township, Mitchell County. They were the parents of one son, Ole E. Thorson.
Erick died on December 28, 1901, and Ragnald died on September 30, 1889.
