BIOGRAPHY--

Charles Herman Duenow was born March 16, 1862, in Langkafel, District Newgardt, Province of Pommerania, Germany. His parents were Carl and Frederika (Kuether) Duenow. Because they were not rich, it was necessary for Charles to help with the family income by herding cattle for farmers during the summer. Later, he worked on a large sheep farm near the village of Dusterbeck. Here he met his future wife. At the age of twenty, he came to America with his parents arriving in St. Ansgar in April, 1882.

On February 15, 1887, he married Ottilie Borchardt. They first lived on a farm in St. Ansgar township. In 1895, they moved near Grafton where they lived until the fall of 1898. At this time, they moved to the farm they had purchased east of St. Ansgar. On June 26, 1904, Ottilie died at their home. The baby, Lawrence, was only two months old and the oldest child, Robert, was sixteen years old. This was a hard blow and difficult years followed. With the help of God, kind relatives and friends, these difficulties in a measure, were overcome.

On January 25, 1914, Charley married Mrs. Anna Langrock. She died in August, 1943. He then returned to the farm to make his home with son, Max, and daughter, Minnie. Charles died on April 17, 1949 and was buried in the Toeterville Cemetery.
