Following from the booklet "Meroa" written by Gertrude Crowell:

- Martin could read and write both Norwegian and English. He attended the Walnut Grove school, located across the road from the Rock Creek Lutheran church, two miles from Martin's home. Ole Jeglum was Martin's first teacher.

- In 1894, the Osage, Iowa newspaper states that Martin and E.K. Evens, shipped a carload of horses to northern Minnesota.

- 1898 - The Osage, Iowa newspaper states that Martin is having a house put up by the side of his own to be occupied by his mother. It is being built by S. V. Moen.

- In 1904, Martin and Emelia bought a 160 acre farm on the Rudd blacktop, Mitchell County, Iowa from Christopher Eliason. Clarence and Gladys Klemesrud lived here in 1946 with them so Gladys could help care for her mother. After Emelia died, Clarence and family moved into Osage, Iowa and Leonard and Josie Maakestad and family moved here. They lived here until Edwin moved in, in 1963. Martin and Emelia had lived across the road on the Eliason place at one time. In 1975, Dwight Onken bought the farm from the John Maakestad Estate. He tore down the old brick house and replaced it with a trailer home. He later moved off the place and in 1998, no one lives there. John Maakestad had bought this farm from his father, Martin in 1927 and lived here until his death in 1974. This was the Johannes and Katherina (Wambiem) Maakestad homestead.

All of their children were raised here until they married and moved out. Several families lived and worked for Martin and others in the neighborhood. Odin Sorose operated a garage near the road for a time. Martin bought some of the land at different times, some from Martin Johnson, in 1910, and from Halsten Norby Estate in 1917. He divided all of his land into 3 farms, each about 160 acres. (These farms in the 1970's were: Maurice Maakestad, Edwin Maakestad, Jr., and Dwight Onken.) A family named Karlstad lived here and worked for Martin, then moved on the old Halsten Norby farm. Kenneth and Nora Klemesrud and Kathleen lived here around 1934. Leonard and Josie Maakestad and Franklin lived here around 1938, Franklin was born here. Helen and Edwin Maakestad lived here for a while and there first child, Dorothy, was born here in 1923. The Jim Forbes family lived here one year in 1915.

In 1955, the house was torn down which was east of the 1998 Dean Johnson farm. This was a one time home for Martin and Emelia Maakestad.

In the 1911 Mitchell County Atlas, Section 2, page 19: Martin H. Maakestad, who owns the old homestead on Section 7-97-17, but resides on Section 13-97-18. In his later years, he lived on the farm in the summer with his sons and their families. There is a photo of his family in Sec. 3, page 30.

Martin H Maakestad died August 17, 1961 at Osage, Mitchell, Iowa and is buried at the Rock Creek Lutheran Cemetery, Meroa, Cedar, Mitchell, Iowa.

There is a memorial fro him at Find a Grave #11703712.
