Accidental Shot
Fatal to Former Stacyville Man

William Pitzen, But Lately
Removed to Stanwood,
Killed Last Friday

The community was shocked last Friday to learn of the death of one of their former best-known citizens, William Pitzen, who was accidentally shot when returning from a duck-hunting trip to his home at Stanwood.

Mr. Pitzen, who had but lately moved from Stacyville to Stanwood, was out with some friends hunting ducks. Stepping into a depression in the ground, his gun swung muzzle-up under his chin, and was accidentally discharged, killing him instantly.

William Pitzen was born in Stacyville, Iowa, July 31, 1885 and died October 29, 1931.

In the spring of 1907 Mr. Pitzen went to Napoleon, North Dakota, where he homesteaded and later worked in a hardware store and elevator, remaining there about three years. Returning to Stacyville he became the manager of the Farmer's Elevator, which position he held until about two weeks ago, when he resigned and moved to Stanwood.

Mr. Pitzen was married to Amy Kinney, on September 12, 1911. Two daughters were born to them, Helen and Alice.

The wife and daughters survive him, also his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Nick Pitzen; four sisters and two brothers as follows: Mrs. Bertha Theobold, Mrs. Frank Blake, Stacyville; Mrs. Fred Smith, Glenwood, Minnesota, Mrs. Nick Krebsbach, Napoleon, N.D.; Joe and Fred, Stacyville.

Alois passed away 17 years ago.

Mr. Pitzen was a kind and loving husband and father, and was well-liked by all who knew him. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

Funeral services were Monday morning at 9 o'clock at St. Mary's Church.

Among those from away who were present at the funeral were: J.M. Clark, Mission, South Dakota; Mr. and Mrs. Fielding, Elgin, Minnesota; Mr. and Mrs. T. Roman, Waterloo; Messrs. and Mmes. Will and J. Heise, of Wisconsin; Mrs. Alice Barette, Mrs. Frank Wilson, Mrs. Weaver. Mr. and Mrs. M. Jayen, of Cedar Rapids; Mr. and Mrs. Joe Pitzen, Storm lake; Mrs. Fred Smith, Glenwood, Paul Kinney, Dr. and Mrs. Fillingworth and Father Herbes, Dubuque; and Mr. and Mrs. John Kottner, New Hampton.
