Melvin J. Popp, age 77, of Osage, passed away Tuesday, June 22, 2010, at the Mitchell County Regional Health Center Emergency Room in Osage.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday, June 25, 2010, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Osage with Rev. John Moser officiating. Interment will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery with military honors at the grave by Osage American Legion Post 278 and Osage V.F.W. Post 7920. Visitation will be held from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. Thursday at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage with a Knights of Columbus rosary at 4:30 p.m.
Mel was born in rural Mitchell County on June 12, 1933, to John and Frances (Falk) Popp. He attended rural school and graduated from Osage High School in 1951. Mel served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. On July 5, 1958, he married Dorothy Fox at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Osage. Mel farmed and operated Popp Backhoe and Trenching until his retirement. He looked forward to his annual Canadian fishing trips and spending time with his family. Mel was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Osage, the Knights of Columbus, Osage American Legion, and Osage V.F.W. He was also a Rock Township trustee and was chairman of the Osage Rural Fire Board.
Mel is survived by his wife, Dorothy; his daughter, Deb and her sons, Brad and Dan Evans, his son, Dennis (Kim) and their sons, Adam, Joe and Ben, his son, Dan (Jill) and their children, Jared, Jadie, Josie and Jace, his daughter, Diane and her children, Katie, Jim and Jenna Plotzke, and his daughter, Donna (Brian) Bruesewitz and their children, Maddie and Melanie, all of Osage.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother, Don.
