Evan Dale Johnston, age 57, of Osage, died Friday, June 18, 2010, at the Mitchell County Regional Health Center Hospice Unit in Osage.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 23, 2010, at the United Church of Christ in Osage with Pastor Ruth Moerdyk officiating. There will be Peace Officer Honors by the Motor Vehicle Enforcement Honor Guard. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage.

Evan was born November 18, 1952, in Mount Ayr, Iowa, the son of Ronald and Bonnie (Cowell) Johnston. He graduated from Davis County High School in 1971 and from Indian Hills Community College in Centerville in 1973. On December 1, 1973, he married Rita Scott at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. They lived and worked in the Iowa City area and moved to Osage in 1978. Evan worked as a Motor Vehicle Enforcement Officer for the Iowa DOT, retiring in 2009. He was an active member of the United Church of Christ where he ushered, served on the worship team, and assisted in many other areas of the church. He enjoyed his family and spending time with his grandson. Evan also enjoyed his work, traveling, fishing, music and playing the guitar, going with youth on church mission trips, and was an avid Minnesota Vikings fan.

Evan is survived by his wife, Rita Johnston of Osage; three daughters, Veronica (Jason) Baldwin and their son, Christopher “Topher” of Albuquerque, New Mexico, Amanda Johnston of Osage, Alana Johnston of Osage; his parents, Ronald and Bonnie Johnston of Osage; and one brother, Alvin Johnston of Waukon.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents.
