Mother, son died
in road collision

Mitchell County recorded it's first and second fatalities of 1980 following a two-vehicle accident Friday morning.

Diane Decklever, 20, of Osage, and her three-year-old son Jason Peterson, were killed when Decklever attempted to pass two westbound cars on Highway 9 and collided with an eastbound tandem straight truck driven by Verner Fenrich, 52, of Grove City, Minnesota.

Decklever was on her way to class at NIACC.

The mother and son were pinned in the wreckage for 90 minutes. Jason died instantly and his mother was taken to Mitchell County Memorial Hospital and then to St. Mary's in Rochester where she died of head injuries.

The car was a total loss and the truck sustained about $4,000 damage. Hilda Fenrich, a passenger in the truck, was taken to Memorial Hospital with back injuries.

The accident was investigated by Sheriff Richard Jahnel and Deputy Curt Younker.
