Gaylord Torney, 1930-2003
Services for Gaylord Torney, age 72, of Riceville were held Thursday, April 3, 2003 at the Conway Funeral Home and burial was in Riverside Cemetery, both in Riceville. Reverend Dan Christiansen officiated. Military rites were conducted by Roy Gue Post #244 at the cemetery.
Gaylord died at his home in Riceville on Monday, March 31, 2003.
Gaylord Torney was born on April 3, 1930 in Riceville, Iowa, the son of Glendon G. and Mary (Buttolph) Torney. He attended and graduated from Riceville High School.
Following his schooling he moved to Waterloo and began working as a wiring machineoperator at Rath Packing Co. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Waterloo, where he was united in marriage to Marilyn Wilson on August 26, 1951.
On September 7, 1951 he was inducted into the United States Army and served until his honorable discharge on August 20, 1953. Following his discharge from the Army, they lived in Waterloo.
In 1963 they bought the Kakac Store in Saratoga and in 1966 he started working for Howard County as a maintainer operator, retiring in 1992.
Gaylord was a member of the American Legion, Roy Gue Post in Riceville. He liked to fish, play cards, go to the casinos and spend time with his daughter, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
On January 12, 1989 Marilyn died and on September 15, 1990 he was united in marriage to Doloris Brockney at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa.
Preceding him in death were his parents, his wife Marilyn, one great-grandson Austin and one brother Ronald Torney.
Gaylord is survived by his wife Doloris; one daughter Debbie Smith and her husband Larry of Riceville: four stepchildren Roger, Rick, Jerry and Sandra Brockney; five grandchildren Lisa, Shannon, Jeremy, Jill and Robin; eight step-grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and one brother Gary Torney of Riceville, Iowa.
Conway Funeral Home, Riceville, was in charge of arrangements.
