OBITUARY: Ellen (Clark) Tibbetts, 1862-1939
Ellen Clark was born in Cedar Township, Mitchell County, Iowa, July 29, 1862, and passed away at her home west of McIntire at the age of 76 years, 8 months, and one day. She was the fourth daughter of Thomas and Jane Clark, pioneers of Mitchell County who settled on the Clark homestead, southwest of Osage in an early day, and where, "Ellie" grew to womanhood.
In her immediate family were six sisters and three brothers, all of whom have passed on except one sister, Mrs. Lizzie Ball of Osage, and a brother, W. Clark, of Boothwyn, Penn.
On October 7, 1889, she was married to John E. Tibbetts and to this union eight children were born, the eldest, Jesse Ernest, died in infancy, and Lulu Velna, at the age of 3 years.
Except for five years spent in Kansas, her entire life was spent in Iowa, and all but a few in Mitchell County. She lived a quiet life, but all who knew her could not help but be helped by her cheerfulness. She was a faithful wife, a kind mother, a very helpful neighbor, and a true friend.
Her cheerfulness and devotion to Christ, the keen interest in her family, are outstanding traits of her character. She will be missed by friends and family. Her long and useful life challenges us all to the simple, clear faith, which was the foundation of her wonderful life.
For a number of years she has been a patient sufferer of heart trouble, and for the past six months her health has gradually failed. About four weeks ago she was taken with the flu and complications, which resulted in her death early Friday morning, March 30th.
The deceased is survived by her husband, John E. Tibbits; three daughters, Mrs. Ella Angell, LeRoy, Minn.; Mrs. Bessie Sheldon, Orchard, Myrtie Tibbits, McIntire; three sons, Harvey E., LeRoy, Minn., Harold J., and Leslie V., McIntire; a sister and brother, named above. There are seven grandsons; a number of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held a the Champion funeral home at Osage, Monday at 2:00, with the Rev. Bodenham, Riceville, in charge of the services. The Rev. and Mrs. Eaton, of the Riceville Baptist church, sang, "The Old Rugged Cross", "In the Sweet Bye and Bye", and "Does Jesus Care?"
Pallbearers were George Carter, Conrad Fehr, Jas. Gunsallus, Frank Hennessey, Wm. Canny, and Harry Wallace. Burial was in the Osage cemetery.
Numbered among those from away who came to attend the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. H.R. Tibbits, Minneapolis, Kansas; Mr. and Mrs. Riley Tibbits and son, of Minneapolis Kansas; Wm. Tibbits, and Mrs. Rose Graham, of Nora Springs; Mrs. R.M. Whipple of Charles City; Mrs. E.E. Coonradt, Waverly; Mrs. H.C. Medinnis, of LeRoy Minn.; Mrs. Mary Goodnow and son Leonard; Mr. and Mrs. George Scheidecker, Mrs. E. Depuew, all of Clarksville; Mr. and Mrs. Harry Knight, LeRoy.
