OSAGE WOMAN IS DEAD AT AGE 94, RITES SATURDAY
Osage, Iowa - Mrs. Marie Specht, 94, died at 2 p.m. Thursday, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. John Suchy, of old age complications, having been ill for a short periods.

Marie Krulish was born in Kutnahora, Bohemia, May 16, 1855, to Frank and Mary (Haloubek) Krulish.
In 1863 she accompanied the parental family to New York City, coming in a sailing vessel across the Atlantic with her parents, two brothers, and a sister but three weeks old. Sailing time consumed 12 weeks.
This was during the turbulent days of the Civil war period when the family established its first home in America.
"Grandma Specht" often told the family of her earlier days in New York, when as a small girl, she stood in line to view Abraham Lincoln’s body as it lay in state.
TO IOWA IN 1867
In 1867, the family came to Iowa with the exception of the eldest son, Joseph, who remained in New York and later became a prominent figure in New York political circles.
Nearest railroad town was Adams, Minn., and the remainder of the journey st St. Ansgar was made by wagon.
They settled in the east central part of St. Ansgar township becoming part of that colony known as the Bohemian settlement.
Here she spent her girlhood days and November 23, 1872, was married to Joseph Specht, a settler here who also was born in Bohemia.
The couple established their first home in Mitchell, where Mr. Specht was employed as a shoemaker. They purchased 80 acres near St. Ansgar, which was their home until 1918, when they retired and purchased a home in St. Ansgar.
They resided there until 1928, when they moved to Osage, where Mr. Specht died in 1932.
Since that time Mrs. Specht had made her home with her two daughters, Mrs. Josephine Suchy and Mrs. Charles Barzl, both of Osage. She was the last member of a family of seven children.
KNEW TEDDY ROOSEVELT
Survivors include her two daughters one grandson, and two great-grandchildren.
Preceding her also were three sisters, Mrs. Joseph Petersman; Mrs. Anton Suchy, and an infant sister and three brothers, Joseph, Frank, and Louis Krulish.
Convent educated, Mrs. Specht early learned the rudiments of fine handwork, and until her eyesight failed, did innumerable pieces of fine work.
She knew many famous personages, including Theodore Roosevelt, whom she met through her brother, Joseph. She made a trip to New York at the age of 84 -- her last long journey.
