Hold Funeral Monday
for Mitchell Pioneer

OSAGE, IOWA — A funeral was to be held at 2 p.m., Monday at the Champion Funeral Home for John Henry Bamford, 83, long-time Mitchell County resident. In charge of the service was his son-in-law, the Rev. G. W. McNary, Little Falls, Minnesota, Congregational pastor, at whose home, Mr. Bamford spent his last days.

Committal was to be in the Oak Grove Cemetery, Mitchell.

John Henry Bamford, son of Henry Bamford and Hannah Hancock, was born in Winslow, Illinois on March 30, 1856.

When six weeks old he was brought by his parents to the new home which they were establishing in Mitchell, Mitchell county, Iowa. Here he spent all his life, with the exception of three years as a child in Waterloo and one year in Redlands, California.

He was married to Cora Rice, on August 30, 1877. She died on January 13, 1937. Seven children were born to them. One of them died in childhood.

Mr. Bamford was one of the oldest continuous residents in Mitchell county. He served as postmaster of Mitchell for eight years, and as a member of the village council and school board. He was a devoted and active member of the Congregational church in Mitchell.

The last months of his life were spent in the home of his daughter, Mrs. George McNary, in Little Falls, Minnesota.

He died in St. Gabriels' hospital in Little Falls, at the age of 89 years and four months.

Surviving are six children: Mrs. H.W. Gillette of Minneapolis; Mrs. C.A. Indra of Lena, Illinois; Mrs. S.E. Colley of Crystal, North Dakota; Mrs. George W. McNary, and J. Herbert Bamford of Minnewaukon, North Dakota; and John R. Bamford of Waterloo.

Funeral services were held in the Champion Funeral Home in Osage on Monday, August 20, conducted by his son-in-law, the Rev. George W. McNary, minister of the First Congregational church of Little Falls, Minnesota. Interment was in Oak Grove cemetery at Mitchell.
