Gladys Steene, 1896-1981

Gladys Steene Funeral Held Tuesday, July 28

Funeral services for Gladys Steene, 85, who died July 25 at the St. Ansgar Good Samaritan Center, were held July 28 at the Mona Lutheran church with the Rev. Gaylord Grant officiating.

Gladys Steene was born March 24, 1896 in Otranto township, the youngest child of Jens and Anna (Haroldson) Steene. She grew up in a family of two sisters and four brothers. She attended Mona grade school and was graduated from Lyle high school as valedictorian of her class.

Miss Steene continued to live on the home farm and became active in church and community organizations. She was Sunday school superintendent for over 20 years, active in Ladies Aid and Bible study circles, sang in the church choir, was an active member of the Women's Christian Temperance Union and Jewish Mission Society. She was never too busy to give help to the sick, the poor and the sorrowing.

Because of poor health, she entered the Good Samaritan Center here August 3, 1971 and continued to be a resident there until her death.

Miss Steene was preceded in death by her parents, her two sisters, Mrs. Theodore (Clara) Tieman and Mrs. James (Emma) Sorensen and her four brothers, Halvor, Ben, Bert and Andrew. She is survived by one sister-in-law, Mrs. Ben (Emma) Steene; one brother-in-law, James Sorensen; one nephew, Arnold Tieman; three nieces, Eris Teets, Eva Corneia [Cornelia?] and Henrietta Norby.

Burial was in Pleasant Hill cemetery, Mona, with Rev. Grant in charge of the committal services.
