Lars L. Sorlie 1859-1947
Funeral services were held for Lars L. Sorlie, 88, on Thursday March 13, 1947.
He died at a Mason City hospital on Saturday, March 8, of infirmities of old age. He had been hospitalized for two weeks.
The last rites were held at the Rock Creek Lutheran Church with the Rev. S. O. Sorlien in charge. A former pastor, Rev. O.C. Myhre preached the funeral sermon. Mrs. Alvin Christiansen furnished a couple of songs accompanied by Miss Alida Motland. Burial was made in the Rock Creek Cemetery.
Lars Larsen Sorlie was born on October 15, 1859 at Sorum, Norway, the son of Lars and Karen Sorlie. He was baptized and confirmed in the Sorum church. As a young man, he worked with his father as a mason.
In the spring of 1882 he came to the United States and was at Algona, Iowa, a few months. That fall he came to Cedar Township, Mitchell County, Iowa, and worked in the Meroa community. In the winter months, he attended public schools in Meroa and the Cedar Valley seminary.
In 1887 he was married to Bertha Fjelde and they established their home on a farm in Rock Township. Three daughters were born to this union: Ina, Clara, and Lydia. In December 1892, Bertha Fjelde Sorlie passed away, being preceded in death by her daughter, Lydia.
In 1898, he moved to Cedar Township where he lived until he retired to Osage in 1919. On June 10, 1902, he was married to Maren O. Lund of Oslo, Norway. To this union were born: Borghild, Lars O., Hilmar, Louise M. and Oscar.
Being a member of the Rock Creek Lutheran church, he was a regular attendant of Sunday school and church services as long as his health permitted. He was also a member of the Board of Trustees and the church council at times.
Surviving are his wife and three daughters: Clara Flenn, of Maiden Rock, Wisconsin, Mrs. Louise Berge and Borghild Sorlie of Osage. He is survived by the following grand children: Lloyd and Myrtle Flenn of Maiden Rock, Loren, Lois, Arthur, Margaret, and Elizabeth Berge, all of Osage. One sister, Mrs. Maren Arno, of Osage and several nieces and nephews also survive.
Preceding him in death were his parents, four brothers and two sisters, all in Norway, as well as two daughters and three sons.
