Mrs. Fred Scofield, c1872-1895

Death of Mrs. Fred Scofield

The people of our city were greatly shocked on Sabbath morning to hear of the sudden and unexpected death of Mrs. Fred Scofield. Few knew that she was sick and her friends thought the evening before that she was on the highway to recovery. Mrs. Scofield has been a resident of this city for a few months only, but had endeared herself to a large circle of friends. Those who knew her most intimately and came in daily contact with her speak warmly of her soul in songs. She had literary taste and was an all enthusiastic chautaugua student.

In childhood she united with the Methodist church and she was a humble follower of the Master. She was full of life and animation. She had no thought of a life of mere pleasure or leisure. She had no need to plan how to kill time. She was young and hopeful and felt that the real work of life had just begun. She was full of energy and had many plans for the future. Alas, her plans were never to be realized.

Her sickness was brief. There were a few days of keen suffering on her part and deep anxiety on the part of her friends and then the worst seemed over. Alas, we know not what day may bring forth. On Sabbath morning while the bells were ringing for church, her feet were crossing the mysterious river of death.

She was a noble and true woman, and her death seems untimely. She was in her twenty-third year and had not been married quite two years. The funeral services were held on Tuesday afternoon and were conducted by Rev. W. W. Gist.
