BUSINESSMAN'S RITES ARE HELD
SAMUEL A. WHITEMAN, FOUND DEAD IN BED, ACTED AS GRAIN BUYER
St. Ansgar, Sept. 27----Rites for Samuel A. Whiteman, found dead in his bed, were held at the Methodist church Tuesday afternoon, the Rev M. W. McKinley and Supt. H. F. Risse in charge. Interment was made in the family lot in St. Ansgar cemetery.
Mr. Whiteman was born in Columbia county, Wis., December 17, 1861. At about 8 he came to Iowa with his parents locating in Mitchell county. In his early twenties he went to Corwith where he spent three years. Upon the death of his mother he came back to Mitchell county where he lived with his father and other members of the family.
On January 30, 1884, he was married to Mary J. Featherstone of Mitchell, the Rev. Mr. Oliver reading the ceremony. He and his bride came to St. Ansgar and established a home on a farm east of town, later they moved to a farm in the Otranto and Meltonville community.
About 34 years ago Mr. and Mrs. Whiteman moved to St. Ansgar where Mr. Whiteman entered into partnership with Rudolph Helfritz in the St. Ansgar mills. He sold his interest in the mills and entered the restaurant business for three years. He then occupied a position as grain buyer for the Farmers Co-operative organization, the St. Ansgar Lumber and Grain company, spending 21 years with the company.
Mr. and Mrs. Whiteman celebrated their golden wedding anniversary about a year and a half ago.
Surviving are hs widow, Mary Whiteman, two children, Clayton B. Whiteman of Clinton, and Maybelle Hendrickson of St. Ansgar, four grandchildren and one sister, Mrs. Lizzie Low of Windom, Minn.
