Mrs. Henry Gooder
Sarah Hartley Gooder was born in Yorkshire, England, October 29, 1822 and died at her home at Osage, May 19, 1904. She had thus passed her eighty-first birthday. In June 1842, she came from England to America and on June 21st, 1842, she was united in marriage with Henry Gooder. For 62 years this couple have met life's battles together and also enjoyed its pleasures.
They were married in New Jersey and made that state their home for two years. They then moved to Wisconsin, where they lived 33 years. 29 years last April, they came to Iowa, and lived in and near Riceville until they moved to Osage three years last November.
Two children of Brother and Sister Gooder are deceased. Those living are John William of Des Moines; Allen of the State of Washington; Nimrod of Riceville; Henry of Ft. Scott, Kans.; Hiram of Doran; and Mrs Hannah Sinott of Osage. There are 27 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren.
Sister Gooder was converted and joined the church when she was about twenty-five years old and has been a consistent member of the church of her choice since that time. For nearly five years she has been deprived of the privileges of public worship but has had the comforts of religion all this time. A good wife, a kind mother, a helpful friend and a Christian has gone from us. She was a woman of sterling character and one who will be sadly missed by her family and many friends. The now lonely husband has tenderly cared for and watched over her declining years with a most tender devotion and he has the sympathy of the community in his lonliness.
A short service was held at the late home Saturday morning at nine o'clock, after which the body was taken to Riceville, where a public service was held at 2 o'clock at the Methodist church, Rev. L. C. Clark of this city officiating. The remains were then borne to their last resting place in the Riceville cemetery.
The aged husband, especially has the sympathy of all, as he is left alone in his home in his old age, when he most needs the companionship of the one with whom he had spent so many years of his life.
