Matilda Olive (Baldwin) Erickson, 1851-1930,
Matilda Olive Erickson, daughter of Philander and Harriet Baldwin, was born in Logan county, Ohio, February 12, 1851. When but a small child she immigrated to Fayette county, Iowa, with her parents, making the journey in a covered wagon and ferrying across the Mississippi at McGregor. Later the family moved to Mitchell county, Iowa, locating near Orchard, where she grew to womanhood, was united in marriage to Clause Erickson almost fifty years ago.
About thirty years ago they sold their farm in Iowa and bought about four and one miles south of Egan, where they lived for about five years, then to Egan, where they resided until a little over a year ago when her health failed, necessitating her giving up her home. She was cared for by a doctor.
Mrs. Frank Peck of Madison, South Dakota, later accompanying her doctor, Mrs. A.G. Glass to Sioux City and at whose home she passed away at 1 a.m. July 23.
Mrs. Erickson was the eldest of a family of ten, her mother, Harriet Mather-Baldwin being a great-great-granddaughter of Colton Mather, noted New England jurist.
She is survived by her husband, Clause Erickson, of Madison, three daughters, Mrs. A. W. Mills of Madison; Mrs. Fred L. Peck, Mankato; Mrs. A. G. Class of Sioux City, Iowa; three step children, Carl of Spring Brook, North Dakota, Albert of Buffalo, Wyoming; Mrs. Edith Mackenroth of Minneapolis, one son Harley having passed away about 25 years ago. Her only grandchildren, seven in number, were present at the services.
Two brothers, Chas. Baldwin, of Minneapolis and William, of Jamestown, North Dakota.
