Assor Halstensen Groth was born at Aal, Hallingdal, Norway, January 21st, 1815. Here he was baptized and confirmed. He emigrated to the United States in 1852, visiting friends in Wisconsin enroute to Clermont, Iowa, where he joined the Lutheran congregation and remained for two years. He came to St. nsgar in the spring of 1854 and on the 22nd of June he joined the congregation of which he was an active member until enfeebled by old age. He was especially interested in the welfare of parochial schools and in having the education of the young based on Christian principles.
He married Kjirsti Aslesen September 28th, 1854. This union was blessed with 13 children. During all these 53 years, Mr. Groth has lived on the old homestead. On September 28th, 1904 Mr. and Mrs. Groth had the great pleasure of celebrating their golden wedding. A large concourse of friends was present at this occasion.
For some time his strength has been failing. He has been sick abed since August last. He passed away very quietly on the Reformation day, October 31st. He often spoke of his faith and trust in Jesus as the Saviour of his soul and repeatedly said that he trusted in nothing else for salvation.
His aged wife and 7 children survive him. Fortunately they were all situated so they could be present at the funeral, 14 grandchildren were also present. The names of the surviving children are as follows: Jacob A. Groth, Mrs. Prof. H.S. Houg, Halsten A. Groth, Andrew A. Groth, Torkel A. Groth, Mrs. M.G. Tollefsen and Anton C. Groth. The funeral services took place at the U.N.L. church on Monday, November 5th, at 1:30 p.m. The remains were laid to rest at the U.N.L. cemetery north of town. The church was crowded to the doors. Those from a distance who attended the funeral are: A.O. Nesby and his son, C.A. Nesby from Jackson, Minnesota, S.K. Groth and O.K. Groth from Thor, Iowa, A.S. Houg, E.S. Halstensen and C.S. Halstensen from Elgin, Iowa, and Mr. K.C. Finessgaard of Kenyon, Minnesota.
