OBITUARY: George W. Godfrey, 1866-1939

George W. Godfrey Died Saturday
Was Ill for Two Weeks

George W. Godfrey, 73, farmer of West Lincoln township died at his home southeast of Osage, October 14, 1939, after an illness of about two weeks from flu. Mr. Godfrey had been in his usual health until stricken with the disease, but failed rapidly.

Mr. Godfrey was born in Rock County, Wisconsin, December 31, 1866. He came to Iowa in 1886, and settled on the farm where he lived the remainder of his life.

In the year 1888 he was united in marriage to Daisy Welch, of Minneapolis, Minnesota. To this union five children were born three daughters, and two sons.

One daughter, Mrs. C. E. Bower, preceded him in death in 1935.

He leaves to mourn his passing his wife; his daughters, Mrs. Vern Tenney, of Osage, and Mrs. L. F. Austin, of Denver, Colorado; his sons, Glen, of Osage and Staley, who had helped his father operate the home farm. There are fifteen grandchildren; five brothers, Edwin and Herbert of Chicago; John, of Gilman, Wisconsin; Eugene, of Lime Center, Wisconsin; Ray, of Walker, Montana, and two sisters, Mrs. Will McDonald, of Whitewater, Wisconsin, and Mrs. Hal Hickman, of Laporte, Indiana(??).

Funeral service was held at the Champion funeral home Monday afternoon, conducted by the Rev. H.M. Grant, pastor of the Methodist church, and interment made in the Osage cemetery.

Relatives from away attending the funeral were the Rev. John R. Godfrey and wife of Gilman, Wisconsin; Mrs. Will McDonald, Whitewater, Wisconsin; Eugene Godfrey, of Lime Center, Wisconsin; Albert McComb, Whitewater, Wisconsin; Abbie Kyle, of Fort Atkinson; Mrs. Horace Badley and Mrs. Frank Avery, of Chicago; Mrs. Dora Lehman, Elgin, Mrs. Cora White, Monona, and Mr. and Mrs. H. Ramsey and the latter's father, of Oelwein. Also the deceased daughter, Mrs. L. F. Austin, of Denver, Colorado.
