Hattie Hermina Mary (Muller) Bortz, 1885-1961

Funeral services were held Thursday at Our Savior’s Lutheran church for Mrs. Hattie Bortz, 76, who died July 4th at Mitchell County Memorial hospital. Mrs. Bortz had been ill for several months.

The Rev. Walter Gigstad, associate pastor of the church, was in charge of the services. Arrangements were made by C.R. Champion and Sons. Burial was in the Evergreen cemetery at Rudd.

Hattie Hermina Mary Muller was born June 23, 1885, in Cedar Township, Mitchell county, the daughter of Otto and Anna Muller. She attended the rural schools in that area, and completed her schooling at Rudd where the family moved when she was 11 years old. As a girl, she assisted her father in the operation of Muller’s General store in Rudd.

She was confirmed at the Nora Springs Lutheran church and later joined with Our Savior’s Lutheran, after moving to Osage 20 years ago. She was active in the Ladies Aid and circles of the church.

Her marriage to William G. Bortz took place November 11, 1907. They established their home on a farm two and one-half miles north of Rudd, living there until the death of Mr. Bortz on May 12, 1940. The following September she moved to Osage to make her home with her sisters, Anna and Amelia Muller.

Surviving are her three children, Mrs. Matilda Schmidt and Alvin Bortz of Rudd and Mrs. Chester Brandau of Nora Springs, 10 grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, and her two sisters, Anna and Amelia Muller of Osage.

Preceding Mrs. Bortz in death was her husband, William, her parents, one brother, Otto, three sisters, Mrs. Adolpha Kollman, Mrs. Lena Hartwig, and Mrs. Bertha Witzel.
