BORN AND BURIED IN MITCHELL COUNTY, IOWA
Rev. Alois B. May, 1921-1996
WATERLOO, IOWA -- The Rev. Alois B. May, 75, of 1423 Kimball Avenue, died Thursday, Aug. 1, 1996, at the Covenant Medical Center, of a heart attack.
Services will be held Monday at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Waterloo, under the auspices of St. Edward Catholic Church, with burial Tuesday at Sacred Heart Cemetery, Meyer, Iowa, with full military rites conducted by the American Legion Post #0569 of Stacyville, Iowa.
Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on South St., is in charge of arrangements.
Alois May was born February 13, 1921, at Meyer, the son of John P. and Margaret Hackenmiller May. He graduated from Visitation High School in Stacyville, and received his B.A. degree from Loras College.
He attended two years at St. Mary's Seminary, Baltimore; and two years at St. Bernard Seminary, St. Bernard, Ala. He was ordained to the priesthood on May 29, 1954, at Chapel of Christ the King, Dubuque.
The Rev. May was a temporary associate pastor at Immaculate Conception Parish, Cedar Rapids, for one year in 1954. He then served as associate pastor at St. Mary's, Marshalltown, from 1954 to 1960; Holy Family Church, Mason City, from 1960 to 1962; Basilica of St. Francis-Xavier, Dyersville, from 1968 to 1977; and St. Patrick's, Dubuque, from 1977 to 1983. He had a pastoral assignment in Mississippi from 1962 to 1968.
The Rev. May has served as associate pastor at St. Edward Catholic Church in Waterloo since 1983.
He also served four years of active duty in the United States Navy as a pharmacist mate during World War II, and was an organist at the Naval Air Station, Jacksonville, Florida.
He is survived by four brothers, William of Rochester, Minnesota, Earnest and Joseph, both of Colorado Springs, Colorado, and Albert of Stacyville; and a sister, Julia Koenigs of Adams, Minnesota.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Raymond and Roman.
Memorials may be given in his name to St. Edward Catholic Church, Waterloo, or Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Meyer.
