William A. GROTH 1898-1968

St. Ansgar resident, Bill Groth, 70, died, November 19, 1968. He was the son of Jacob A. Groth and Cecilia Halstenson.

He married Irene Dahl about 1918-1920. They were the parents of three children, including a son, William J. Groth, born November 15, 1921 in St. Ansgar.

He was serving in the U.S. Army in 1918.

Preceded in death by his parents.

William Groth

Services for William Groth, 70, who died Tuesday at the Osage Hospital will be 2 P.M. Thursday at First Lutheran Church; burial in church cemetery.

He is survived by his widow, Irene; a son, William of Independence; a daughter, Mrs. Marilyn Wilkerson of Washington, D. C.; a sister, Alma Groth of St. Ansgar; a brother, Joe of Austin, Minnesota.

Schroeder and Houg Funeral Home in charge.

Funeral services for William A. Groth, 70, were held Thursday, November 21, 1968 at First Lutheran church with the Rev. Don Comnick in charge. Burial was in First Lutheran cemetery.

William August Groth, the son of Jacob and Cecelia Halstenson Groth, was born May 16, 1898 on the Groth homestead north of St. Ansgar. He was baptized and confirmed in the First Lutheran church and attended the Clyde school completing his education in the St. Ansgar public school. Bill assisted his father on the farm while his two brother were in military service.

On August 11, 1920 he was united in marriage to Irene Dahl. This union was blessed with three children, William J., Homer, who died in 1928; and Marilyn. For several years Bill was in the grocery business in St. Ansgar, with his brother, Joseph and later on Bill and his wife owned and operated what is now the East End Grocery in St. Ansgar.

The past years he has been custodian of First Lutheran cemetery until his health failed last April and he had to be hospitalized in Methodist hospital, Rochester. He died at Mitchell County Memorial hospital in Osage November 19, 1968.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his son, Homer, one sister, Miss Clara Groth, and one brother, Adolph Groth and by one grandson.

He is survived by his wife, Irene; his son, William J. Groth of Independence; a daughter, Mrs. Marilyn Wilkerson, Washington, D.C.; four grandchildren; a sister, Miss Alma Groth, St. Ansgar; and a brother, Joseph C. Groth of Austin, Minn; and other relatives and friends.
