Edmund J. McCarthy, 1913-2004

Edmund "Ed" McCarthy, formerly of the New Haven, Iowa, area died Saturday, May 22, 2004 at Cedarview Care Center, Owatonna, Minnesota.

A Mass of Chrisitan Burial was held Tuesday, May 25, 2004, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Rev. Peter Klein officiating. Interment followed at Sacred Heart Cemetery.

Ed was born Nov. 16, 1913 in Douglas Township, to Henry and Allie (Schweiger) McCarthy. He was a member of the graduating class of 1931 at New Haven High School in New Haven, Iowa.

He married Magdalene Gray on Sept. 6, 1939, at Sacred Heart Church in Owatonna. Ed worked at Jostens Manufacturing Co., Owatonna until 1947 when he and his brother-in-law Merle Gasner started a plumbing contracting business and named the business Gasner and Mac Plumbing and Heating. Ed became sole owner in 1973 and renamed the business McCarthy Plumbing and Heating, he continued to run the business along with his two sons until 1977 when Ed retired.

Ed was preceded in death by sons Dennis in 1972 and Larry in 1998 and two brothers, Bernard and Henry, Jr.

Ed is survived by his wife of 65 years, children Jack and Judy McCarthy of Owatonna, Patrick and Shirley McCarthy of Waseca, Jan and Russ Bower of Owatonna, Dan McCarthy of Owatonna, Cathie and Jack Butler of Crawfordville, Florida, Carol and Jim Huntoon of Excelsior, Philip and Tracy of Aurora, Illinois; and daughter-in-law Karen McCarthy of Lakeville; 18 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; brother, Tom and Dorothy McCarthy of McIntire, Iowa; sisters, Marian Pitzen of Osage, Iowa, Mary and Lynn King of Sacramento, California, Grace Thornton of Austin, Patricia Detrick of Dallas, Texas, Jeanette and Frank Gallagher of Doylestown, Pennsylvania.
